“King of Prairie” The Buffalo who reigned supreme over North America’s grasslands. Thousands of these majestic animals once roamed the grasslands. Many Native Americans believed buffalo spirits brought sacred knowledge to the people of the plains. The Coyote is thought to have released the buffalo on the earth to help feed the native people. Failure to respect the buffalo was thought to cause unsuccessful hunts or the cause of a hunter’s death. Buffalo are spiritually powerful to many tribes, especially in the Great Plains region. Their horns, hides and bones were often used for clothing,spiritual ceremonies, artifacts and tools.The buffalo was viewed as a symbol of honor and generosity.
